The Civic Collection 1974 – 2009
An exhibition of artwork from the collection of Monaghan County Museum.
On display from November 2009 until April 10th 2010.
Monaghan County Museum has built up a diverse collection of artworks since 1974 when it opened. The range of art includes oils, watercolours and textiles both framed and unframed. Sculpture in bronze and stone are also evident. Portraiture, abstract art and historical subjects are among the varied pieces that comprise the collection.
The works are unique and some are of historical importance such as “Castleblayney Castle” by John Nixon dated 1818, which is one of the older works on display, depicting the earliest known image of handball in Ireland. “Chaplin in a ghetto” by Martin J Forker in 1981 is an abstract piece and the majestic “Seven geese in flight” by Bernadette ni Ghallchoir in 1995 is a fine example of bronze sculpture.
This is a unique opportunity to view art works that are rarely displayed as well as others that have become firm favourites with our visitors through the years. The range of media used and the artists displayed combine to make this an event not to be missed. You don’t have to be an artist or even need to study art in order to appreciate this exhibition. The variety of materials and colours create a display that has something that will appeal to everyone
