Lake Water Quality

Monaghan Co Council has monitored water quality in 50 lakes annually since 2001. Monitoring results indicate many of the county’s lakes are of unsatisfactory quality. A significant problem in Co Monaghan is eutrophication of lake water, i.e. enrichment with nutrients particularly phosphorus. Elevated phosphorus levels in lakes can give rise to excessive algal growth often turning all or part of a lake green in colour  (known as algal blooms).
Information on individual lakes can be sought from the Environment Section of Monaghan Co Council.
