Role Committee members

Definition
Committee members have been selected by from within their department/organization/council to work as part of a team to implement Monaghan Local Authorities obligations under the Disability Act 2005. 

Overall role
Committee members are selected and appointed to lead Monaghan Local Authorities in delivering and meeting the objectives and specific obligations of the Disability Act 2005 and Outline Sectoral Plan from the Department of Environment Heritage & Local Government.
They balance this responsibility with their knowledge of local authority services and the settings in which they are delivered.  

Specific expectations
In performing this function, committee members have a responsibility to:
To ensure Monaghan Local Authorities are meeting their objectives under the Disability Act through

    • Overseeing and participating in the delivery of Accessibility Audits to identify barriers to access.
    • Oversee the development of an implementation plan  setting out the key actions that will be carried out to meet the LA’s obligations under the Disability Act 2005.
    • Oversee and monitor the allocation and spend of appropriate funding (both internal & external) to deliver actions with the implementation plan.
    • Advise and guide the work of the Access officer in relation to the implementation plan and targets set out within it.
    • Participate on sub committees of the Steering committee most appropriate to their area of work

Possess the necessary knowledge

  • Acquire and apply knowledge of the Disability Act 2005/Outline Sectoral Plan and Monaghan Local Authorities obligations within it.
  • Maintain a knowledge of issues relevant to the Disability Act steering  committee.
  • Review all material in advance of committee meetings.
  • Identify information needed to enhance committee discussions and decision making.
  • Bring information and progress reports to their relevant department to give them informed of Monaghan LA progress in implementing the Disability Act

Participate in Committee decision making

  • Arrange schedule to allow attendance at meetings.
  • Contribute constructively to committee discussions and decision making.
  • Maintain positive working relationships within the committee, including the chairperson, other members and relevant staff.
  • Raise/resolve concerns about the committee with the chairperson.
  • Respect the views, knowledge and expertise of other committee members.
Identify issues to be added to the committee’s agenda.
