Clones Erne East Sports Partnership Project
Monaghan County Council, in partnership with Clones Erne East Sports Partnership, Clones Town Council, and Fermanagh District Council is proposing to construct a new iconic sports facility the townland of Liseggerton, Clones, Co. Monaghan. The project is being funded under the European Union PEACE III programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.
The site is located to the north-west of Clones town centre and straddles the Urban District Boundary of Clones Town Council
The development consists of:
- Construction of a new 1285m2 sports building.
- The relocation of the GAA ground of St Tiernach’s GAA Club.
- The provision of an 8 lane, 400m, Athletics Track and Field area.
- The provision of a 136m x 86m 3G Multi-Purpose Sports Pitch.
- Flood lighting to all Pitches and Track.
- New entrance and access road, footpaths and general site lighting.
- 108 no. new car and 3 no. new coach parking spaces.
- Regrading of the site to suit the playing surfaces.
- New entrance, boundary walls, fencing and signage.
- Landscape planting.
- All associated site works and services.
Access into the development is provided from the existing entrance off Church Hill to the north of Clones Town Centre. Two feature walls and a vertical sculptural panel form the entrance and provide the public image of the site to the passerby. The entrance wall to the south is, by way of agreement with the adjacent landowner, set back to provide a generous setting for the entrance, while also providing appropriate sightlines. The grade of the access road within the site is raised and 6m wide. Separate vehicular and pedestrian entrance gates are provided to allow the closure of the facility when required.
The Sports Hall is designed as a single storey complex, with a double height, 600m Sports Hall located to the south. The single storey accommodation is planned to the northwest, north and east of the Hall. A central lobby and circulation space forms the fulcrum of the building plan, around which the ancillary accommodation, such as changing facilities, kitchen, referees room, first aid and WC’s, is located. Visual connections and pedestrian access is provided directly to all of the external sports facilities from this central space.
It is hoped that planning approval for the project will be obtained by summer 2010. Construction is programmed to commence in spring 2011 with the completed development being operational by spring 2013. The estimated total cost of the project is €8.5million. This is being funded by €7.8million grant assistance under the European Union PEACE III programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body, €0.5million from Clones Erne East Sports Partnership and €0.3million from Monaghan County Council.
