N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland Border Rd Scheme

Background

The N2A5 Dublin – Derry road is the national primary route linking Dublin with Northern Ireland and N2Realignment the northwest. The N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland Road Scheme proposes to upgrade approximately 28km of the N2 in north County Monaghan between the village of Clontibret and the border of County Tyrone.

The N2 in County Monaghan has been subject to a number of road improvement schemes in recent years, including:

  • The Carrickmacross Bypass (Opened in 2005)
  • The Monaghan Town Bypass (Opened in 2006)
  • The Clontibret to Castleblayney 2+1 Road Realignment (Opened in 2007)

The A5 in Northern Ireland is proposed for upgrade to dual carriageway standard as part of the A5 Western Transport Corridor (WTC) Scheme (www.a5wtc.com)  currently being progressed in Northern Ireland. The proposed N2 Clontibret to Northern Ireland Border road scheme proposes to connect the N2 Clontibret to Castleblayney 2+1 Road realignment and the A5 WTC scheme in Northern Ireland.

Grontmij Consulting Engineers were appointed by Monaghan County Council in late 2008 to design this road improvement project.

The project is being advanced in line with the NRA Project Management Guidelines. The project will be progressed through a number of key stages; Feasibility Study, Constraints Study, Route Selection, Design, The Statutory Processes, Tender, Construction and Closeout. Public consultations are undertaken at various points during the design process. As the project advances, reports and information will be published on this website.
