Council Housing

About Council Housing

Monaghan County Council provides social housing support to those who are in need of accommodation and cannot provide it for themselves. To do this the Council operates a 'Scheme for the Allocation of Social Housing Support'.

To be considered for Housing support you must fill out an application form. This form must be submitted to your local Council, together with all relevant documents. Application Forms are available from the County Council and the Town Councils. You may also download an application form by clicking on the link below.

Who is eligible for Housing Support?

To be eligible for Housing Support:

  • You must be over 18.
  • You must be able to demonstrate that you are in need of accommodation.
  • You must be unable to provide this accommodation from your own means.

What happens when I have completed my application?

If you are eligible for Housing Support:

  • The relevant Council will review your application.
  • An Environmental Health Officer will arrange to meet you. They will assess your current accommodation needs.
  • Houses are then allocated to applicants in order of priority, taking all circumstances into account.

How is Housing Support Allocated?

Housing support is allocated using the Councils 'Scheme for the Allocation of Social Housing Support'. The scheme looks at things like:

  • The condition of current housing accommodation
  • Overcrowding
  • Lack of facilities
  • Homelessness
  • Medical Grounds
  • Compassionate Grounds
  • Length of time on the waiting list

Points are awarded in each category and the overall score determines where an individual is placed on the list. The Council also takes into consideration the Housing stocks it has available. So a large house will generally be allocated to a larger family. A house that is adapted for special needs will generally be allocated to a person with a disability, and so on.

Houses are only allocated to those who can demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria. Any person submitting false information to gain a Council House is committing a crime and is liable to prosecution and a fine of up to €2,000.
