“Monaghan County Council implements the Control of Dogs Act 1986 – 1992.
"This involves ensuring that all dog owners abide by the requirements of the Act and act responsibly so that their pets do not present a danger or a nuisance to their neighbours or livestock or the general public.
The provisions of the Act are implemented by the Monaghan County Council Dog Warden. The Dog Warden seizes and collects stray and unwanted dogs, investigates complaints about dogs and checks that dog owners licence and identify each dog in their possession.
Stray and unwanted dogs are kept at Monaghan County Council Dog Pound near Lisdoonan, Carrickmacross.
In 2011 724 dogs were admitted to the Pound. 65 of these were reclaimed by their owners, 539 were rehomed with the kind assistance of Carrick Dog Shelter and the Monaghan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and118 were euthanased by lethal injection.”
